Weave Design

Weave Drafting

If you are a weaver, you probably know how to read an existing draft, but what if you want to design your own fabric? Have extra warp already threaded on your loom? Found a swatch of fabric with an interesting structure you would like to replicate? We will learn how to read, write and speak in “weave draft!” Bring along any drafts or swatches you are curious about! Should know what a weave draft is but experience not necessary. [Half day to two day workshop.]

Drafting for Burnouts

Burnout or devoré is a mild chemical process that dissolves certain fibers in the cloth only where you print or paint it. On silk backed velvet it leaves transparent areas with no pile. On 100% cotton it will leave holes. Finding fabric that works with this process is difficult and often expensive. You can create your own fabric so burnt out areas leave behind just the weave structure you want. How about leaf shapes of twill in the middle of a crepe fabric? Double-weave polka dots in tabby? Learn how to design and draft your own fabrics to use with commercial or homemade burnout paste. You’ll get the recipe and learn how to successfully design and process the cloth. Intermediate to advanced. Must understand basic weave structures and know how to draft them. [Half day to two week workshop, or could be a seminar topic.]

Customized Weaving Workshops also Available:

I will work with your guild or group to plan a course to fit your interests. Topics could include basic weave drafting, computer drafting, double weaves, sampling, threedimensional structures, designing weave structures suitable for devoré (burnout) or cloqué (shrinking), finishing methods, etc. Let me know what you’re thinking about! [One day to two-week workshops] Materials and facility needs will vary.

Facility and Material Needed:

Tables or computer stations, looms or space for student table & floor looms as needed, large table space for meeting & demonstrating, and access to power point projector & screen.
